Japan also has four very different seasons, which makes it a popular choice for a destination wedding. But weather is often the biggest factor in how smoothly your wedding day goes — not just the venue or the budget. This guide goes season by season and looks at what matters most to couples planning from abroad: flights, holidays, typhoons, and guest comfort. It will help you pick the right season for a stress-free Japan wedding.

Cherry blossoms usually bloom from late March to early April. This is the dream setting for a Sakura Wedding. But this is also peak travel season, so flights and hotels to Tokyo and Osaka sell out fast. Book your flights and venue 3~6 months ahead.

Keep in mind:

• The bloom dates change every year and only last 1~2 weeks. If you need to work around your guests’ vacation days, keep your plans flexible instead of fixing one exact date.
• Spring mornings and evenings can be cold, even if the daytime is warm. Many guests don’t expect this. Remind them to bring a light jacket.
• April can sometimes have a sudden cold spell. For an outdoor ceremony, have an indoor backup plan in case of rain or cold weather.

Japan’s rainy season runs from early June to mid-July. It’s humid and uncomfortable for many people. After the rain stops, summer gets very hot — often above 35°C (95°F). Typhoon season runs from July to October. Coastal areas like Kyushu have higher risk. If you’re planning a wedding near the coast, keep a close eye on typhoon forecasts.

Keep in mind:

• Late July and August usually have more sunny days. Choose an indoor venue, or an outdoor space with shade.
• Flights can be delayed or canceled during typhoon season. Buy wedding insurance that covers flight delays and cancellations. Ask your venue what their plan is for bad weather.
• Many guests aren’t used to Japan’s heat and humidity. Hand fans, cold drinks, and umbrellas for shade will help keep them comfortable.

Mid-October to November has the most stable weather, with little rain. It’s also when the leaves turn red and gold. This is Japan’s busiest wedding season, and many people call it the best time for a Japan wedding.

Keep in mind:

• Early-to-mid September can still have typhoons. It’s safer to plan your ceremony after late September.
• Autumn leaf-viewing weddings are very popular in November. Book popular spots like Kyoto or Nikko at least six months ahead. Talk to a Japan wedding planner early so you don’t lose your date.
• It gets colder in the evening as the season goes on. For evening outdoor events, offer guests something warm — first-time visitors to Japan often don’t pack enough layers.

Cities on the Pacific coast — Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto — have dry, clear winter weather. This is great for wedding photos with a blue sky. If you want a snowy wedding, Hokkaido is a beautiful choice.

Keep in mind:

• Pacific coast cities don’t get much rain or snow, but it can get very cold. Guests should pack warm clothes.
• A snowy Hokkaido wedding is romantic, but snow can delay flights. Add an extra day before and after your trip, just in case.
• Winter is the quiet season for weddings in Japan, so prices are often lower. This is a good time for couples on a budget, and there’s often more room to negotiate.
